A Prayer for Grief and Loss
Grief doesn't follow a schedule. It comes in waves when you least expect it. This prayer doesn't try to fix what can't be fixed. It just asks God to sit with you in it.
A Prayer
Lord, I am holding a loss I didn't choose and can't undo. The world keeps moving and I feel stuck in a moment that won't release me.
I don't know how to pray about this. I don't have words that are big enough. So I'm just going to sit here with you and let the silence be the prayer.
Thank you for being close to the brokenhearted. Not close in a way that erases the pain, but close in a way that means I am not alone in it. You don't ask me to be okay before I'm okay. You just stay.
Help me carry this without pretending it's lighter than it is. Help me honor what I've lost without letting the loss become all I can see. Give me permission to grieve at my own pace, in my own way, without anyone else's timeline.
And when the waves come, because they will, be the steady thing underneath them. Not taking the wave away, but holding me so I don't drown in it.
For the days when I think I'm getting better and then I'm not, remind me that grief is not a straight line. It is love with nowhere to go. And love that deep is not a weakness. It is evidence of something that mattered.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture for Reflection
Psalm 34:18
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit, a promise not of removal but of presence, that God draws nearest when we are most shattered.
Matthew 5:4
Jesus says, Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted, redefining grief not as something to rush through but as a space where God's comfort arrives in its own time.
Revelation 21:4
John writes that God will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, a vision of a future where grief itself comes to an end.
Reflection
Grief is not a problem to be solved. It is love that has lost its destination. The depth of what you feel is not a sign that something is wrong with you. It is evidence of how much what you lost mattered.
Well-meaning people may tell you it's time to move on. But grief does not answer to a calendar. It has its own rhythm, its own waves, its own unexpected returns. You are not behind. You are not failing. You are grieving, and that takes as long as it takes.
If grief is making it hard to function, if it has been a long time and the weight is not lifting, or if you are having thoughts of harming yourself, please reach out to a grief counselor, a trusted pastor, or a crisis line. You are not meant to carry this alone, and professional help is not a sign of weak faith. It is wisdom.
